FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is home Bitcoin mining and what gear do I need?

Home Bitcoin mining allows hobbyists to participate in the Bitcoin network without needing massive, noisy industrial equipment. We specialise in compact, efficient open-source miners like the Bitaxe Gamma, NerdQaxe++, and NerdOCTaxe. All you need is a standard Australian power outlet, a Wi-Fi connection, and a Bitcoin wallet.

How do I connect and set up my new miner?

Setting up your open-source miner is straightforward. When plugged in, the miner broadcasts its own Wi-Fi hotspot. Connect to this hotspot using your phone or computer, open your web browser, and follow the on-screen prompts to enter your home Wi-Fi details, your Bitcoin wallet address, and your pool information. The miner will then reboot and start hashing.

Do I need a complex home network setup?

Not at all. While these devices fit perfectly into advanced home labs, they only require a basic 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection to function. They use very little bandwidth, so they won't slow down your streaming or gaming.

How much power do these miners use? Can I run them on solar?

These miners are incredibly energy-efficient. A Bitaxe Gamma, for example, draws only around 15 to 20 watts per TH. Because the power draw is so low, they are absolutely perfect for soaking up excess daytime generation if you have a home solar and battery setup, making your hashing essentially free.

How do I mine directly to the Home Bitcoin Miners pool?

We run a dedicated local pool! To point your miner to our pool, access your miner's web dashboard and enter the following settings:

  • Stratum URL / Pool Address: pool.homebitcoinminers.au
  • Port: 2018
  • User / Wallet: Enter your personal Bitcoin wallet address here.
  • Password: x (or leave blank depending on your firmware)

You can track your miner's performance and live stats by visiting pool.homebitcoinminers.au.

What is the difference between Solo Mining and Pool Mining?

Solo Mining is like playing the lottery. Your device works alone to solve a block. If you succeed, you win the entire block reward plus transaction fees. Because home miners have a lower hash rate, finding a block solo is rare, but highly rewarding.

Pool Mining groups your hash rate with other miners. When the pool finds a block, the reward is split among all participants. Many of our customers choose to solo mine purely for the thrill and to support the decentralisation of the network.

How loud are these miners?

Unlike industrial ASIC miners that sound like jet engines, desktop miners like the NerdQaxe and Bitaxe utilise small, quiet cooling fans. They produce a low hum similar to a desktop PC, making them perfectly suitable for a home office, living room, or garage.

What kind of Bitcoin wallet do I need?

Any standard Bitcoin wallet will work. We highly recommend self-custody hardware wallets (like a Trezor or Ledger) or reputable software wallets. To get started, simply generate a receive address in your wallet app and paste it into your miner's configuration page. Just remember to save your seed phrase somewhere safe, and never share it with anyone under any circumstances.

Do you ship locally within Australia?

Yes! We are proudly Australian-owned and operated, dispatching locally right out of the Melbourne area in Victoria. This means you avoid long international shipping delays, import taxes, and the need for foreign power adapters. We supply gear ready to plug into standard AU sockets.
